This week on At the Local we feature the ‘Our Handful of Fragments Collective’ - a group of more than 20 young Brisbane based artists practicing various creative mediums. Their common goal is to produce and support original work.They’ve put together a performance showcase which you can get along to at Visible Ink in Fortitude Valley on the 31st of July, and at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre in the Moreton Bay Region on the 8th of August. Moneth Montemayor (Project Coordinator), Daniel Maloney (writer and director) and Anja Homberg (assistant director and stage manager) come into the studio to talk about it.

People in residential care in Qld, you have a friend in the Qld Community Care Network! This week At the Local spoke to QCCN’s Samantha and Grace. The QCCN manages a volunteer program of people visiting elderly people who live in residential care on the Gold Coast, in Brisbane and in central Qld. Grace is only 16 years old and has been volunteering with the network for three years. She tells us about her wonderful experiences meeting and becoming friends with elderly people through her volunteer work. Samantha lets us know how people can become involved, it only takes one hour a fortnight to spread a little friendship and happiness!

Fair Trade Fortnight

To mark the end of Fair Trade Fortnight we talk to Frankie who is hosting the Highgate Hill Fair Trade Coffee Break. The event is an Oxfam initiative that encourages ordinary Australians to organise in their communities to promote sustainable production and income security for producers. More than 500 separate events have been registered across Australia this year!

Frankie tells us how the Highgate Hill Fair Trade Coffee Break will include live music from Cosmicos, dance performances, cakes, artist stalls, and of course fair trade coffee supplied by 4ZzZfm subscriber business Blackstar Coffee! Cosmicos performs live in studio to give us a musical taste of what to expect on the day.

Boystown Creates Songscapes

As part of National Youth Week, At the Local takes an in-depth look at a very special project run by Art Therapist Kandy McCout at Boystown Logan. A group of young people shared their thoughts and feelings about the role music plays in their life, then they recorded some performances in Dubwise Studios and put it all together to form the Songscapes Documentary. At the Local premieres the doco this week and invites the young people involved on a tour of 4ZzZ.

Yes This Is Art!

National Youth Week 2009 (March 28-April 5) is a week full of events to celebrate and showcase the talent of Australia’s younger generations. One event that caught At The Local’s attention was ‘Yes This Is Art’, an event created by a young artist, for young artists. Yes This Is Art runs over two days in the Moreton Bay Region and includes a concert, art exhibition and free workshops.

Giordana and Laura talk to the event’s creator and organiser Sarah Keating about the line up, and about what it means to be a young artist in 2009. Local band Damasyria, who will be playing at Yes This Is Art, also drop into the studio to give a live performance.

Bleeding Hearts helping out

This week At the Local speaks to Peter Collins, Business Manager of Bleeding Hearts Gallery and Cafe. Bleeding Hearts is a profit-for-purpose organisation working with local and indigenous artists and providing fair trade coffee to the Brisbane community through their Ann St premises in the School of Arts building.

Bleeding Hearts launches the Heart of Gold exhibition at their gallery on Friday the 13th March and proceeds of arts sales go towards helping the work of BRISSC. Ann Gilet from BRISSC tells us about the work of this long-running communtiy organisation.

A community funding initiative to support local music

Creative types in Brisbane have stacks of talent to offer to the world. However “getting yourself out there” inevitably requires $$, and trying to fund your idea can often land you on struggle street. Grants? Sponsors? Record labels? Slaving away for years at that minimum wage job?

Brisbane band The Upsteppers took at different approach to producing their album Ready That Stony Ground. Front man James Douglas came up with the Neighbourhood Recording Deal where individual community members were invited to give micro loans to the band which were then paid back with 20 per cent interest following the release of the CD. James chats with At the Local’s Laura & Olivia about the NRD; about some of the pitfalls involved in securing funding in the music industry; and how to find support for your art in your own backyard.

Alternative Transport In Brisbane
