Creative types in Brisbane have stacks of talent to offer to the world. However “getting yourself out there” inevitably requires $$, and trying to fund your idea can often land you on struggle street. Grants? Sponsors? Record labels? Slaving away for years at that minimum wage job?

Brisbane band The Upsteppers took at different approach to producing their album Ready That Stony Ground. Front man James Douglas came up with the Neighbourhood Recording Deal where individual community members were invited to give micro loans to the band which were then paid back with 20 per cent interest following the release of the CD. James chats with At the Local’s Laura & Olivia about the NRD; about some of the pitfalls involved in securing funding in the music industry; and how to find support for your art in your own backyard.
